Strategies for Employee Retention

 

Managers influence employees a lot. If there are no metrics to evaluate manager's performance, then there is not a chance that improvements can be introduced in the system. That's why there needs to be some metrics in place for evaluation. With these metrics, the company will know which among their managers are really doing well and which are not. And for those who are not achieving, coaching is the best solution.

 

Emphasis on training first level supervisors is also important. Good supervisors are somehow also crucial to employee retention. Some say that employees do not quit jobs. They quit supervisors. Regular meetings are very helpful if you want to reach out to your employees, and also to discuss about their performance and what is expected of them.

 

But employee problems should be dealt with at the root. In order for a company not to have problems in retention, they should hire the right people right at the outset. People they hire should be the ones who have skills to do the job at hand because then these workers are better fit for the job. These are the workers that are more likely to stay for a long time. Human resources thru a performance management software should take out their focus on an applicant's personality.

 

There needs to be a plan for an employee to be able to attain greater pay, recognition and responsibility. Although not everyone can reach the highest positions, at least every employee can gain new skills. There has to be a system by which the skills are recognized. Managers or supervisors should also challenge their subordinates to gain more skills. This will produce better employees and will give everyone a sense of accomplishment and success.

 

Flexibility in work conditions can also be considered. There can be ways to accommodate the non-work responsibilities and desires of your employees. Be flexible. Rules that are too rigid can drive some of your employees away.

 

Train personnel who will be responsible in helping their co-workers who are stressed in work.

 

Provide for benefits. These benefits should meet the real need of your employees like health insurance, life insurance, retirement's savings plans and the like.

 

What about employee retention strategies? It is sometimes good to adjust total pay. Financial awards or bonuses should be given to employees who hit goal targets. Employees who have stayed long with the company should be given raises. These are beneficial for employee retention. If an employee does not see any possibility of a raise, chances are their enthusiasm will be dashed.
